Important Tips to Know When Using Puzzle Toys with your Dog

Last week, in our blog, we shared with you our favorite interactive toys. Interactive toys offer different levels of difficulty. If this is the first time your fluffy friend is exposed to a puzzle toy, here are some easy tips:

🐾  Start with simple toys. Let your dog’s curiosity dictate interest in more advanced games.

🐾  Introduce your dog to the toy.  When introducing your pup to a puzzle toy, place treats in sections that are left open. Once Fido learns that there are treats in the toy and he can smell the treats, make things a little more challenging by closing the sections after filling. You may close the sections gradually to increase the level of difficulty slowly.

🐾  Choose the appropriate size. Choose toys that are suitable for your dog’s size and chewing style. Is your dog teething, is your pup an aggressive chewer or is your Fido aging? These are essential questions to consider when you are getting the toys. Also, be careful with small toys for your dog. These can be a choking hazard.

🐾  Use the puzzle toy as a feeder. Some puzzle or interactive toys have enough space to fit your dog’s daily food allowance. This is a great way to keep your pup busy and work for his food.

🐾  Puzzle toys can help slow down your dog. They are perfect for slowing down pups that like to eat too fast.

🐾  Puzzle toys can entice fuzzy eaters. Some dogs refuse to eat. Interactive toys are an alternative that could stimulate them to work for their food.

🐾 Interactive toys can grow bacteria.  Daily wash and rinse is a must to avoid the buildup of bacteria.

🐾  Keep tabs of how many treats you give your dog. It is easy to overfeed your pup with these toys. Ensure that the treats are no more than 10% of your dog’s daily calorie intake.
