How to Choose The Best Leash For Your Dog

There are generally three types of leashes. The flat leash, the retractable leash, and the slip leash. Depending on the occasion, you might prefer one type of leash over the other. It’s important to consider the different functions of leashes such as, for daily walks, hikes, vet visits, and dog training. If you’re a first-time dog owner, here is how you can determine the best leash for you and your furry friend.

Length

For example, if your dog is not great with people or other dogs, a flat leash may be the best choice because you can control exactly how far they get without an opportunity to get further. A well-trained walker is able to have a retractable leash because they can explore without you getting nervous. Finally, a stray dog or dog that pulls too hard may need a slip leash which gets tighter as they pull so that they know it is not acceptable to behave that way.

Material

Most leashes are made out of the material nylon. Most dogs, especially when excited, chew on their leash which can end up letting them break loose if you are not careful. An alternative to nylon is leather. Although it is on the pricier side, leather is sturdier and dogs have more trouble chewing through them.

Clasp

Bold snap clasps are the ones that open when you press down on the small lever. These clips are usually more than enough, however, with time they may snap. Also, plastic clips are much more likely to break open, so always opt for metal!

Trigger snap clips are very similar to bold snaps but they are more reliable. Like leather leashes, they come with heftier price tags. If you can financially afford a trigger snap clip, it is the more trustworthy option.
