How To Safely Swim With Your Dog This Summer

Taking your dog to the lake, beach, or even swimming in the pool is a great way to cool them off on a hot summer day. This is one of the best ways to spend a summer afternoon. Although many dogs are considered natural-born swimmers, the water can still pose potential threats to your furry friend’s health. This is why it’s important to stay informed about water dog safety and the ways to prevent accidents from occurring.

Here is how to safely swim with your dog this summer:

Should My Dog Wear a Life Jacket?

ALL dogs must wear a life jacket. Even the strongest of swimmers can tire out, get a leg cramp while swimming, or venture too far out. In this unfortunate event, your dog may not be able to keep its head above the water, resulting in an emergency situation. To avoid this scenario altogether, put a life vest on your dog because it will be safer.

Introduce Water To Your Dog

Many dogs are able to teach themselves how to swim, but you will have no way of knowing until you actually take them out to the water. Take baby steps by slowly easing your dog into the water and see how they swim. Some dogs don’t like the water so don’t force your furry friend to do something that they’re not comfortable with. If your dog is comfortable playing in the pool, then it’s okay to introduce them to a larger body of water.

Supervise Swimming Pups At All Times

Never leave your dog unattended while they are in the water. Many dogs don’t know their own limits so it’s best to keep an eye on them. Dogs like to playfully bite and this can result in water intoxication. Even though your furry friend is wearing a life jacket, keep a watchful eye on them. Swimming with your pup is a great summer bonding activity and allows you both to get some exercise. Remember that your furry friend should be wearing sunscreen too!

Beware of Overheating

It’s important to make sure that your dog doesn’t overheat on your relaxing beach day or out on the boat. Keep your dog hydrated throughout the day and spend some time relaxing in the shade. If you’re going on a beach day or boat ride, bring your dog’s travel-size water bowl so that you can provide them with fresh water. This can help to prevent heat exhaustion.
