How Dog Walking Can Be Therapeutic

Dogs love walking outside. In every walk, we sniff the fresh air, listen to the birds and different sounds, we love smelling the flowers in the spring and summer, and of course we treasure the opportunity to taste any broken stick we find. This week, I learned that people are growing pumpkins in their yards!

We use all of our senses when we go for a walk and we truly live in the present moment. Our human owners on the other hand, are often consumed by what’s going to happen in the future or what happened in the past. They may go for a walk but their mind is running 100 times faster! While walking you can see them talking on the phone, insanely texting, or obsessing over their overloaded schedule. I’m already exhausted by just thinking about it!

Dogs approach each walk with intense curiosity and enthusiasm to explore our environment. We certainly don’t worry about the destination but enjoy the journey itself.

Next time you walk your dog, try to imitate your dog’s behavior. And I’m not referring to walking on four legs, nor should you be sniffing another person’s bottom. You may get in trouble if you do that. Start your walk as if everything is new to you. When you go for a walk with your dog, I challenge you to turn the ringer of your cellphone off and put it in your pocket (if you are feeling brave- turn the phone off!). While walking with Fluffy, look at your surroundings. Do you see trees? Do you see cars? Do you see buildings or houses or just an open space? Pay attention to the sounds. Do you hear birds? Do you hear cars or a train? Do you hear any other living creatures? What type of different sounds do you hear? What type of smells do you experience?

Take a walk with your furry friend this week and share with us one new thing you discovered with your dog. Share a picture of you and your dog! I am sure your fluffy won’t mind posing for it. Not only we found pumpkins but we saw a new cemetery we had not seen before!
