Protect Your Pup On The Lake: Why Your Dog Should Always Wear a Life Jacket

This past weekend we went to the lake. In anticipation for an exciting and adventurous weekend, we made sure our three dogs were well prepared. I packed their life jackets, two collars for each dog with proper ID info, and two leads per dog. Check out our post on “20 Doggy Essentials to pack for your pup” if you need a comprehensive list for your trip.

If you are planning a water adventure with your companion dog, a flotation device such as a dog life jacket is essential. Below I share some of the benefits of using a flotation device for a dog.

🐾   Life jackets provide safety for unforeseen situations – Even great swimmers can get fatigued, have trouble staying buoyant, become disoriented in the water and struggle to keep their heads above water if injured. Although our three dogs are obsessed with water and are excellent swimmers, I have no control over unforeseen situations. Therefore, I need to ensure they remain safe and above water if something happens to them. With a life jacket, your dog will be able to stay afloat and safe in case of an emergency until he’s rescued. Also, if your dog falls or is struggling against a strong current or wave, it will be easier for your dog to float and for you to rescue him.

🐾   Dog life jackets increase their visibility – An additional advantage of wearing a bright jacket is that your dog will be visible at all times. It will be easy for you, any person on a jet ski, or for a boat passing by to spot your companion dog.

🐾   Dog flotation devices provide a convenient solution to hold your dog when needed – Life jackets include a handle that makes it easier to pull your dog back into the boat, paddle or kayak. Also, the handle is useful if you want to guide your dog while he or she is swimming.

Few tips to help you choose a life jacket for your dog

There are no certifications for canine life jackets, but before purchasing a jacket you should look for the following features:

🐾   It should have a handle that can facilitate holding your dog. Make sure the handle is close to the head. If you want to pull your dog up, you want to always keep his/her head out of the water.

🐾   It should have a D-ring. The ring will enable you to attach a leash if needed.

🐾   Pick a life jacket that has a bright color that can make your dog more visible.

Your pup’s life is priceless. If you plan for your dog to join you on your boating, kayaking, surfing, paddleboarding and rafting adventures, consider investing on a floating device that can keep your pup safe and alive.
