6 Thanksgiving Pet Safety Tips Everyone MUST Know!

Thanksgiving is an amazing holiday to bring together family and friends, yet it carries some dangers for pets. Whether it be travel plans, festive decor, or holiday foods, it is important to accommodate your furry friend! We’ve curated some tips on how to keep your pets best safe during this special season:

Keep pets restrained safely in vehicles

Use a stable harness or carrier to protect your pets in case of sudden braking, swerving, or an accident. Also, keep them located away from any airbags and avoid transporting pets in the bed of a truck. This best protects them from potential injuries, getting stuck in small spaces, or distracting the driver of the vehicle! Best for both your furry friends and those riding with them!

Pack for your pet

Bring necessities such as food, water, and medications. Don’t forget to pack medical records, first aid supplies, and any other items you think your pet may need in case of an emergency!

Visitors can distress your pets

Thanksgiving dinner can mean more visitors– a.k.a more noise and activity than your pet may be used to. If your furry friend tends to get nervous around visitors, put him/her either in another room or in a crate with one of his/her favorites toys. This works to protect your pet and reduce any stress he/she may feel. If you notice your pet starts to get upset or hostile towards guests, chat with your veterinarian about finding a solution to this problem.

Watch the exits

Make sure to watch your pets closely, especially when guests are entering or exiting your home! Even if your pet is typically comfortable around visitors, there is a possibility he/she might bolt through the doorway and runaway.

Put away trash where your pets can’t access it

Some leftovers can be deadly to our four-legged family members! Dispose of any bones, carcasses, packaging, bags, or strings in a secured and covered trash bag. Then toss them in enclosed trash can outdoors or behind a locked door.

Keep decorative plants out of reach

We must remember that some plants or flowers can be toxic to our furry friends. These include Baby’s Breath, Hydrangeas, and some ferns to name a few. So keep the festive table decorations and floral vases away and out of paw’s reach!

So, let’s do our part to create a safe and fun Thanksgiving season for our loved ones (that includes our pets)!
