After eight months of being in some version of quarantine, it’s still not over. Even though it’s become our new norm, it’s still difficult to find ways to take up the extra amounts of time we are spending indoors without socialization. Not only are humans struggling with these adjustments, but so are dogs. To try to help you through the long days of mainly being stuck inside, here 5 ways to keep your dog happy and busy during quarantine!
Play Search and Sniff
Hide or scatter treats around the house and cue your dog to go find them! If you want to make it a little more interesting, you can do it with a particular order, where it’s more like a scavenger hunt. You can set up a trail of hidden treats that will eventually lead them to a prize, such as an even bigger treat!
Go on a Walk
While this certainly isn’t the most creative option, being able to get out of the house, even for a little, is essential for dogs. Luckily, you are able to follow social distancing rules by remaining 6ft apart from others while taking your dog out for a walk. The truth is, taking your dog for a walk will be more of a benefit for you than it ever will be for them. It will not only tire out some of their energy, making playtime a little shorter for you, but it will also allow you to get some much-needed fresh air. It’s a win-win for everyone involved!
Teach Your Dog New Tricks
It’s easy to fall for the, “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks” bit. But, that’s nonsense! Whether you have a new puppy or an older dog, dogs can always learn new tricks. While it may take longer to train an older dog, since they are more set in their ways, it is far from impossible. The great thing about this activity is that you can start off easy, with tricks like teaching them how to give you a paw or shake your hand, and then work your way up! There are limitless options when it comes to teaching your dog new tricks, making it the perfect way to fill up some indoor time during the quarantine.
TV and Snuggle
One of the best activities during the quarantine is to just sit back, get some warm blankets, turn on the tv, and snuggle with your pup. Most dogs just want to spend their time all curled up with their owner, so this activity is typically a huge hit. So, get your Netflix ready for some unbeatable snuggly nights with your pup during the quarantine!
Make Your Own Treats
Making homemade dog treats is one of the best ways to fill up some time with your pup during the quarantine. Since baking has been a very popular activity for people during the quarantine, include your pup in the fun! This way, you both can have some homemade treats together. Here is a quick and easy healthy dog treat recipe to try:
Ingredients:
- 2/3 cup pumpkin puree
- 1/4 cup peanut butter
- 2 large eggs
- 2 1/2 – 3 cups whole wheat flour
Directions:
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat; set aside.
- In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, beat pumpkin puree, peanut butter and eggs on medium-high until well combined, about 1-2 minutes. Gradually add 2 1/2 cups flour at low speed, beating just until incorporated. Add an additional 1/4 cup flour at a time just until the dough is no longer sticky.
- Working on a lightly floured surface, knead the dough 3-4 times until it comes together. Using a rolling pin, roll the dough to 1/4-inch thickness. Using cookie cutters, cut out desired shapes and place onto the prepared baking sheet.
- Place into oven and bake until the edges are golden brown, about 20-25 minutes.*
- Let cool completely.
