5 Reasons to Foster a Puppy

Fostering a dog is a great way to give back to your community and provide a temporary home to a dog in need. There are many benefits to fostering a pet, but the most important benefit is that it is so rewarding to know that you could be saving a life. Many dogs are in need of a home. As much as this puppy could need you, you could need this puppy just as much. Since June is National Foster a Pet Month, here are 5 reasons why you might want to consider fostering a puppy:

You’re Helping Out a Shelter

Oftentimes in crowded shelters, puppies don’t get the special attention that they need to thrive. Shelter environments can be hectic and it can be difficult to tend to every puppy and/or dog. By fostering a puppy, you are giving large amounts of your attention and protection that this puppy will use to grow.

Fostering puppies is a great way to gain useful information about how puppies acclimate to home environments. This allows shelters to obtain a greater understanding of a puppy’s behaviors and personality, ultimately making them better options for adoption. If any behavior issues or triggers arise, shelters can help them find the perfect family well prepared for these conditions.

Additionally, future families will be well aware of their new puppy’s likes and dislikes and the puppy will be used to being around people and other pets.

You Could Save Their Lives

Fostering helps shelters and other rescue organizations save and protect homeless pets by leaving more space open for other animals in need. When shelters and rescues are at full capacity, they cannot take in more animals, no matter how much they want to. Fostering a puppy gives shelters and rescues the opportunity to make room for old or injured animals that could use special attention from staff.

Companionship

If you have been feeling lonely, fostering a puppy could be a great way to build your spirits. Not only are puppies great companions, but it has also been proven that petting puppies provide positive health benefits. Scientists concur that dogs really do make you happier. A puppy will keep you company while you go on a walk or even snuggle up on the couch for a movie night.

Valuable Learning Opportunity

Taking care of a puppy is a large responsibility, but it also provides owners with great learning and teaching opportunities. If you have kids at home, it can help them learn the valuable skills of compassion, time management, and most importantly, how to take care of something other than themselves.

You Might Fall in Love

Raising a puppy is an experience like no other and your family might fall in love with your puppy. A strong bond and attachment can be created that you might consider becoming the pup’s family forever. Fostering a puppy is such a rewarding experience and can lead to so much more than just “providing a home.”
