4 Ways to Curb Your Dog’s Anxiety this Halloween Season

Halloween can be lots of fun for children and adults, but dogs might not be so keen on the holiday as they can get quite stressed during the evening. From constant banging on the door from trick-o-treaters, to silly/scary costumes, and loud noises, there’s a lot to get stressed over. It’s practically a dog park in our home and when one dog gets stressed out and starts barking, it snowballs into a frenzy!

So I’m putting together a few tips and tricks on how to curb your dog’s anxiety this halloween season.

Try to Reduce Outside Noise

If you live on a residential street that is busy with pedestrians walking about and knocking on doors, your dog will notice. It’s their job to notice. Constant knocking and door-opening is a sure way to get your dog in a panic, as well as bring you unwanted stress as well. If you know this is going to happen, I would setup camp outside and greet the trick-o-treaters. This will cut out completely or at least minimize the barking and anxiety caused by strangers knocking at the door.

Cut Down on Costumes

Halloween costumes are unlikely to unsettle any adults, but a dog doesn’t always know you’re wearing a costume. They can be easily fooled by a costume which can frighten them considering they don’t know it’s you!

Use a leash or a crate

If you’re constantly opening and closing the door for trick-o-treaters, the dog has the potential to bolt out if it’s spooked. By keeping the dog on the leash you can ensure no accidents happen while also keeping the dog safe and feeling protected.

On the flip side, a dog that is crate trained will find their crate a comforting place during Halloween. Crates give dogs a sense of security as well as preventing them from getting loose. If you’re expecting guests, this is a great way to protect them from the stress of noise and unwanted visitors.

CBD Oil

CBD Oil is an effective treatment for all sorts of dog anxiety, this includes Halloween. CBD Oil is a safe and effective way to do this. This can be used in tandem with other techniques mentioned int this post. Not only that but it’s super useful if you’re not going to be at home all night.
