10 Dog Movies You Need to Watch Right Now! How Many Have You Seen?

With all of this time inside, I’ve been watching a lot of movies—and especially dog movies! There are some really good dog movies out there, from ones that will make you laugh out loud to ones that will even make you cry.

Below I’ve compiled a list of ten dog movies you need to watch!

1. Marley & Me (2008)

Marley & Me is a heartfelt family drama following the story of newlyweds John and Jenny Grogan. The couple moves from Michigan to Florida and decides to adopt a dog named Marley, an adorable yellow Labrador puppy. However, Marley is a bit of a mischievous dog and definitely gets into a lot of trouble! This story will make you both laugh and cry and is an awesome family movie!

2. A Dog’s Way Home (2019)

A Dog’s Way Home is a story about a puppy named Bella who gets separated from her owner Lucas. In order to get back to her beloved owner, Bella embarks on a 400-mile journey and even meets some new friends along the way. This story is really bittersweet, so make sure you have some tissues nearby!

3. The Secret Life of Pets (2016)

What do our pets do when we’re not around? This cute animated movie from the creators of Despicable Me answers that question! This movie will have you laughing nonstop and is an especially great choice if you are looking for a kid-friendly movie.

4. Dog Days (2018)

This romantic comedy showcases a bunch of dog owners whose lives get interlinked thanks to their pups! The movie stars Vanessa Hudgens, Nina Dobrev, and more! It’s a really cute love story.

5. Benji (1974)

Benji is a classic dog movie that follows the story of a stray pup named Benji who embarks on a crazy adventure to save the two children he loves when they are kidnapped! There’s also a 2018 reboot of this movie available on Netflix, if you are looking for something more modern!

6. A Dog’s Purpose (2017)

A lovable dog (voiced by Josh Gad!) uncovers the meaning of his existence through the lives of the humans he loves. This cute canine becomes reincarnated multiple times over the course of several decades but keeps finding himself drawn to a spirit named Ethan, played by Bryce Gheisar. This movie is super unique and heartfelt and is definitely a must-see!

7. Old Yeller (1957)

Set in the 1860s, Old Yeller is inspired by a true story that follows a family and a runaway dog named Old Yeller. When Old Yeller damages one of the family’s fields, one of the sons, Travis, tries to chase the pup away—but he and his sister eventually warm up to Old Yeller and form an unbreakable bond. This story has amazing critic reviews and is a classic dog movie—just have some tissues handy!

8. Eight Below (2006)

Three members of a scientific expedition must leave their beloved sled dogs behind after a devastating accident in the harsh Antarctic landscape. Alone, the dogs struggle to survive while their owners try to find a way to save them and bring them home. The film is actually based on a true story of a Japanese Antarctic expedition in 1958.

9. Hotel for Dogs (2009)

Hotel for Dogs is a hilarious story about siblings Andi and Bruce who must quickly find a new home for their dog Friday after moving into a foster home that prohibits pets. After finding an abandoned hotel, the siblings transform it into a glamorous hotel for stray dogs—but run into a number of problems.

10. The Call of the Wild (2020)

Starring Harrison Ford, The Call of the Wild is an adventure story set in the 1890s that follows the story of a big-hearted dog named Buck. Buck is suddenly transported from his warm California home and into the wilds of the Alaskan Yukon as he becomes the newest rookie on a mail-delivery dog sled team. This movie is really well-done and has some positive reviews from critics!
