Most pet parents know it’s not a good idea to give their dog chocolate, however, there are many other health hazards for your pet. It’s important to be aware of all the potential hazards so you can help your dog live a long and happy life.
Here are some things you may not have known were poison to your pet:
Grapes and Raisins
If your furry friend consumes a few grapes or raisins, it can be life-threatening. Ingestion of grapes and raisins is linked to kidney failure in canines. If your pet consumes grapes or raisins, contact a medical professional for help. Raisins are dried grapes so they are also toxic to your pet.
Onions
If your dog consumes onions it can become life-threatening anemic. When your dog consumes onions, it causes oxidative damage to its red blood cells. Garlic has a similar effect, so it’s best to keep both out of reach.
Sugar-Free Gum
Sugar-free gum contains xylitol which is an artificial sweetener. This sweetener is toxic to dogs and can cause liver failure and hypoglycemia (low blood pressure). Although one piece of gum may not make your pet sick, consuming a whole pack can be life-threatening. Hide your gum in a place where your dog doesn’t have access.
Tea Tree Oil
Tea tree oil is used for its antibacterial and antifungal effects and can be beneficial for itching, inflammation, and parasites. It should never be used on pets because even a few drops of oil can result in severe poisoning or death. Although concentrations of less than 1-2% are thought to be safe, it’s better to stay clear of this oil altogether.
Pennies
It may seem unlikely that your dog will consume a penny, but dogs are curious animals. Although we never intend for our furry friends to eat a penny, it’s important to pick up any spare change that might have fallen on the floor. Pennies contain zinc which is toxic to animals. If consumed, it can lead to liver failure, kidney failure, and the destruction of red blood cells. If your dog consumes a penny, seek medical help to get it removed.
