Holistic animal care looks at your pet as a whole (overall health) – body (physical), mind (mental and emotional) and soul (spiritual). That is the very essence of the word “(w)holistic.” It means evaluating the whole picture of the patient (your pet) —his or her environment, the disease, and the relationship of the pet with his owner—to ultimately develop a treatment plan using a wide range of therapies to heal the patient.
Holistic veterinarians determine the best combination of both traditional and complementary (or alternative) therapies for a given individual. The conventional treatments typically rely on laboratory tests and prescriptions drugs to alleviate symptoms. The alternative therapies may complementary approaches that can include massage, acupuncture, herbal supplements, aromatherapy, laser therapy, or diet modifications.
The techniques used in holistic medicine are minimally invasive and gentle. They are centered on patient well-being and stress reduction. Below I briefly describe some complementary therapies that holistic veterinarians may use to help your pet:
🐾 Acupuncture. Acupuncture is an alternative therapy that can significantly improve quality of life for pets with various conditions including cancer, osteoarthritis, digestive diseases, pain, and even neurological disorders. This therapy should only be performed by a qualified professional. The main therapeutic effect of this technique is based on the stimulation of nerves at the level of the skin, resulting in signals that can help with pain control, improve immunity, mood, and digestion among others.
🐾 Laser therapy. This therapy works at the cellular level by decreasing the amount of inflammation. Laser therapy is performed with a wand that emits light. The instrument is gently rubbed over your pet’s affected area. Pets with arthritis can benefit from this therapy.
🐾 Canine massage. Just like you and me, your pet can benefit physically and mentally from a body massage. The massage techniques can help your pet’s overall wellness, comfort, and quality of life. Massage can boost the immune, musculoskeletal, digestive, circulatory and nervous system. Massage for healthy active dogs are great to help alleviate occasional aches and promote flexibility, can promote relaxation and support the immune system.
I would encourage you to discuss these options with your veterinarian before starting any complementary treatments. If you want to read more about integrative methods to help your pet below I share some helpful books.
