Summer can be a wonderful time to enjoy outdoor activities with your dogs, but it’s highly important to prioritize their safety and well-being during warmer months. Here are five quick tips for ensuring summer safety for your dogs:

Provide Ample Water

Dogs can easily become dehydrated in hot weather, so always make sure they have access to fresh, clean water. Bring along a portable water bowl on long walks or outings.

Avoid Excessive Heat

Dogs can overheat quickly, especially brachycephalic breeds (dogs with short noses, such as Bulldogs and Pugs). Try to limit exercise during the hottest parts of the day and provide shady areas for them to rest.

Never Leave Dogs In Cars

It’s crucial never to leave your dog in a parked car, even for a few minutes. The temperature inside a car can skyrocket within minutes, leading to heatstroke and even death.

Watch For Heatstroke

Heatstroke is a life-threatening condition. Be aware of symptoms like excessive panting, drooling, rapid heartbeat, vomiting, and lethargy. If you suspect heatstroke, move your dog to a cool area, wet them with cool water and seek immediate veterinary attention.

Use Paw & Sun Protection

Hot pavement, sand, or asphalt can burn your dog’s paw pads. Walk your dog on grass or use protective booties to prevent burns. Additionally, dogs with light-colored or thin fur are more prone to sunburn. Apply pet-safe sunscreen on exposed areas, such as the nose and ears.
