There is nothing worse than losing a pet. We know that pets are family, so when one goes missing, devastation follows. Whether your dog is mischievous, naughty, or simply curious, pet owners should be aware of how to avoid these events. The month of July is “National Lost Pet Prevention Month”, so today we will discuss tactics to ensure your furry friend stays safe and gets home ASAP!
Here’s 5 tips to make sure your pup won’t go missing:
Microchip Your Dog
With today’s technology, microchipping is a pain-free method to track your pet. Unlike collars which can be removed or lost, microchips are placed in your pet’s neck, serving as a life-long identification method. Similar to a regular shot at the vet, most animals feel little to no pain during the procedure. This method allows you to be reunited with your pet in an efficient, and stress-free manner.
Secure Your Backyard
Is your dog a fan of roaming free in the backyard? Most dogs enjoy the feeling of being off leash and getting to explore their surroundings, however, if your dog is not extremely proficient with voice commands, it is very important to secure your backyard. Dogs are naturally curious animals, making it common for them to explore away from home. In order to avoid your pet running off, put up a fence or gate to deter them.
Be Safe In The Car
There’s nothing cuter than a pet sticking its head out the window to enjoy the wind. Most dogs feel immediate excitement when they hear the window start to crack because of the thrill they will soon feel. However, cracking a window too much may cause your pet to stick out too far and either fall or jump out of the vehicle. This not only causes pain for your pet but they may also run off from the fear. In this case, always make sure your window is cracked so that their whole body is unable to escape. This should also be the case for any window in the car because dogs may feel excited and run to a different, more open, window.
Keep Them On A Leash
Although your dog may pull on the leash, indicating it would like to be let loose, keep the leash on. Many pet owners will give into “puppy eyes” and allow their dogs to run loose, but this creates an easy way for pets to easily run off.
Train Your Pet With Voice Commands
Teach your pet easy commands such as “come” and “stay.” Incorporate different distraction methods to make sure your dog will follow the voice commands in all situations.
