How to Introduce a New Pet to Kids

Dogs are such valuable members of our families. Introducing your kids to the new furry friend of the family is such an exciting time for everyone, but there are precautions that should be followed. Unfortunately, there are times when dogs bite or react in an unfriendly manner, so it’s important to prepare for those situations. To avoid these types of situations, it’s important to teach children the correct way to approach and handle a new dog.

Here are ideas on how to introduce a new pet to kids:

Gently Touch/Pet Animals

Most children love animals, but oftentimes they don’t realize that they are squeezing or pulling on a dog’s coat of fur. Children can unintentionally hurt dogs because they don’t fully understand the consequences of their motor skills. In some cases, this can result in bites or aggressive behavior from dogs. To avoid these problems, show your kids the proper way to pet a dog.

Calmly Approach

The best way for children to approach a new dog is from the side and stop with enough room in between so the dog can willingly come to the child. This allows the dog to get adjusted to the situation without getting overwhelmed too quickly. The dog can also approach the child at its own terms and pace. For first introductions, it is recommended to use a leash so you can regain control of the situation that gets out of hand.

Avoid Using Treats

You should avoid giving your dog treats or using toys during the first introductions. Many dogs get excited at the sight of food and can roughly snatch it from small children. Dog toys should also be avoided on first greetings because a dog could become territorial and start playing in a rough manner.

Let the Dog Sniff First

Before petting any dog, let them sniff you. Dogs have a great sense of smell and use it to determine who you are. Stand still and let the dog sniff around you and your child. When allowing the dog to sniff you, avoid shoving your hand into the dog’s face, let the dog come to you.

Avoid Crazy Movements and Loud Sounds

Many children will get excited to be around a new dog and want to initially hug and squeeze them, but they need to refrain from doing so. Quick movements can frighten a dog and cause them to protect themselves by biting or using aggressive behavior.

Don’t Interrupt a Dog That’s Eating

Never interrupt a dog while they are eating. Startling a dog is never a good idea because they can become aggressive. Dogs can be territorial over their food so it’s best not to disturb them while they are eating. Tell your kids to give them space.
