The human capacity to have compassion and help each other is an incredible trait we have. During this holiday season, we (humans) often volunteer to help and share with others, even when there may not be any direct gain to ourselves. According to science, dogs also can also be selfless and willingly give treats to their friends, even when they don’t get a direct reward for their action. I am sure that in some way or another your pet has made your world a better place and transformed many of your sad, dull moments brighter just by being there for you.
This holiday season, is an excellent time for you to transform a sad moment into a brighter one by improving the lives of other pets and people. Below I share with you seven foundations that do a fantastic job helping pets and owners affected by cancer.
🐾 National Canine Cancer Foundation – The National Canine Cancer Foundation funds are used in education, outreach and canine cancer research that focus on prevention, finding cures, better treatments, more accurate cost-effective diagnostic methods for canine cancer. The foundation has created a comprehensive library of every known cancer that affects dogs.
🐾 AKC Canine Health Foundation (CHF) – The AKC Canine Health Foundation has funded canine cancer research since 1995. The funds have helped scientists study cancer at the cellular level, allowing veterinarians to diagnose cancer earlier and treat it more effectively. Currently, about one-third of CHF’s grant funding supports various types of canine cancers.
🐾 The Blue Buffalo Foundation – The Blue Buffalo Foundation includes several programs intended to enhance the lives of pets by funding cancer research and financial assistance for cancer treatments. They also provide veterinary scholarships and financial support to organizations who provide service dogs for disabled military personnel.
🐾 Canines ‘N Kids – The Canines-N-Kids Foundation’s mission is to end cancers that affect children and dogs. The organization supports research in comparative oncology, translational research and clinical trials that address essential questions in shared canine and pediatric tumors.
🐾 The Brodie Fund – The Brodie Fund offers financial assistance, through grants, to families who have pets fighting cancer. They believe that no pet should face economic euthanasia in the fight of their lives because of the owner’s inability to cover the cost. This group offers a list of useful information and cancer resources that every pet owner should know about.
🐾 Animal Cancer Foundation – Animal Cancer Foundation is an organization dedicated to find a cure for cancer by supporting cancer research and increasing public awareness of comparative oncology. The organization supports research that studies the similarities between naturally occurring cancers in people and pets to find cures for both species.
🐾 The Riedel & Cody Fund – The Riedel & Cody Fund supports cancer treatment (chemotherapy or radiation), for dogs and cats. The foundation provides hope to pet owners. A cancer diagnosis is terrifying, and the foundation helps facilitate some of the challenges faced by owners who have a pet with cancer.
Remember, you don’t have to provide money to make a difference. You can also donate your time, skills, passion and love for animals with these organizations. If you want to make a difference, lend a helping paw and show some love.
Happy holidays!
