10 Tips for Removing Animal Fur (From Everything)

Our pets are family. So of course, they deserve to enjoy the same spaces we do! Sadly, the excitement of letting your pet wander around the house quickly wears off when you realize that hair is getting everywhere: on the expensive couch, on the living room curtains, and even in the basket of clean laundry!

Trying to clean up every bit of animal fur around the house can be a huge headache. To help out, I’ve compiled a list of 10 quick tips for removing pet hair from everything, including some pieces of advice for preventing excessive shedding in the future.

  1. Rubber gloves: To easily remove fur from furniture, put on a pair of rubber gloves and run your hand across the surface to collect hair. Once your gloves are covered, rinse them in the sink and repeat. I love this method because it doesn’t create a lot of excess paper or plastic waste.
  2. Rubber balloons: Balloons will use static electricity to attract animal fur! Just run an inflated balloon over your surface and wipe it clean between swipes.
  3. Damp sponge: If you don’t have rubber gloves on hand, a slightly damp sponge can also help remove pet hair quickly. Just follow the same steps as you would with gloves, and voila! This technique is perfect for spot-cleaning around the house.
  4. Liquid fabric softener: If your vacuum is struggling to pick up fur, try this hack. Mix water and a spoonful of liquid fabric softener together in a spray bottle. Spray your carpet lightly and let the solution sit for five minutes. This will help those hidden hairs rise to the surface of the carpet. After five minutes is up, vacuum away!
  5. Microfiber mop: For hardwood floors, a vacuum tends to blow all that fur around. Invest in a microfiber mop, which is also more effective than a traditional mop, because it will actually collect dust and hair together for easy disposal.
  6. Dryer balls: Want your laundry machine to do all the de-fur-ing for you? Purchase a set of dryer balls for pet hair removal. The next time you run the dryer, throw them in to collect stray hairs. Plus, dryer balls have added benefits, like cutting down on drying time!
  7. Lint rollers: To remove hair quickly from your clothes, use a high-quality lint roller. They can be very affordable, and there are tons of available options that specifically remove pet fur. I always keep a lint roller in my car and by my front door, because you never know when you’ll need a quick touch-up!
  8. Anti-static sprays: Invest in a special anti-static dusting spray, which will make it easier to clean up hair by eliminating the electric charge from your fabrics and furniture.
  9. Dryer sheets: Preventing excess shedding can be more time-efficient than trying to pick everything up afterwards. Before letting your pet into the car or the house, you might consider running a dryer sheet through their fur. This will minimize the amount of hair that will eventually find its way onto the floor and furniture.
  10. Frequent brushing: Depending on their breed, your furry friend may require frequent brushings. Try to stick to a consistent brushing routine. Not only is this crucial for your pet’s health, but it can also minimize future shedding.

I hope this helps you live a life that’s now (hopefully) a little more hair-free!
