Being diagnosed with cancer or any other life-threatening illness can be terrifying. Albert and I recently read the book “We’ll Get Through This Together.” In this book, a black lab accompanies a young boy going through cancer treatment.
This book is written from the lab’s perspective to provide comfort to children that are diagnosed with cancer. The book introduces children to topics such as hospitals, treatments, and physical changes kids may endure. It also acknowledges how difficult it can be to be separated from familiar routines, one’s family, home, and support systems.
It is a beautiful story that captures a dog’s unconditional love and friendship through difficult times. It illustrates the profound connection between children and companion dogs.
This book is part of Project Hearts & Tails. Project Hearts & Tails is a wonderful program, designed to bring comfort and hope to children newly diagnosed with cancer. As part of this project, children receive the book “We’ll Get Through This Together!” and a soft, cuddly stuffed black lab pup (just as in the book) to take with them, wherever they go on their treatment journey, and who will provide comfort when they are in treatment.
