At some point or another, your dog has come up to you with those big puppy eyes and tongue out asking for some of your food. Who can say no to that? We think, just a little bit won’t hurt. Well, some foods may be ok for that one time it accidentally falls on the floor, but other human foods can cause serious problems– not only to their diet but overall health and well-being. Here are 5 human foods you should never give to your dog.
AVOCADO
While avocados are very beneficial to a human’s diet, the same does not apply to dogs. Avocados contain persin in their leaves, seed, and bark. If your dog ingests too much of it, it can cause vomiting or diarrhea.
ALCOHOL
Many people might think this is a no-brainer, but some owner’s decisions might surprise you. In comparison to avocado, alcohol affects dogs and people the same way, but in a significantly smaller amount to do so. The slightest amount of alcohol can cause vomiting, diarrhea, breathing problems, central nervous system depression, tremors, coma, and even be fatal. You should never give your dog alcohol, and if some spills, clean it up immediately before they try to lick it.
CHOCOLATE
From the list of foods, chocolate is one that most pet owners understand is bad for dogs but is it important to teach young children that as well. Chocolate is very dangerous for dogs because it contains a toxic substance called methylxanthines, which affects a dog’s metabolic process. Even the slightest amount, especially dark chocolate can result in vomiting and diarrhea and larger amounts can be fatal.
GRAPES
Grapes can be highly toxic to dogs, causing them kidney failure. A single grape could make your dog sick, with the symptoms including, vomiting, diarrhea, weakness, and abdominal pain to name a few. It is very important to consult with your vet immediately if this happens.
COFFEE, TEA, CAFFEINE
Anything containing caffeine can be fatal for your pet. This group also contains toxic substances known as methylxanthines, which can be found in the seeds of the cacao to make coffee and in the nut extracts in some sodas. Some symptoms that will occur are vomiting, diarrhea, panting, hyperactivity, seizures, and even death.
There are many dog-safe human foods that dogs can eat in moderation. However, you should always consult with your veterinarian first to be sure, as every dog is different.
