2 Ways to Improve Your Dog’s Health for 2020

It’s 2020 and you’re setting your new years resolutions. Of course, like anybody, eating healthy is on the list. But, what about your dog? Wouldn’t you like to make sure your pet is as healthy as you this year?

To help you make the right nutritional choices for your pup and get them into shape, here are my 2 simple recommendations for fitness that might make the most difference to your dog.

1. Less Processed Food and More Fruits and Veggies

I suggest that you incorporate vegetables into your dog’s everyday food. I do this because vegetables are a great way to supplement dietary fiber and provide natural vitamins and minerals. Who knew they were good for humans and dogs?

Veggies that are safe for dogs include:

  • Green beans
  • Baby carrots
  • Bell peppers
  • Green leafy vegetables like kale, cabbage, chard and lettuce, as well as leafy herbs like parsley, cilantro, and basil

More important is the “no” list; do not feed the following veggies and fruits to your dog:

  • Onions, scallions, shallots.
  • Grapes and raisins: These can cause kidney failure in a certain population of dogs.
  • Avocados: The flesh of an avocado is not toxic to dogs —but I prefer to avoid feeding avocado entirely with dogs that are prone to weight gain.

And now for the treats, my pups know where the treat jar is, so when i’m fidgeting in the kitchen and accidentally tap the cupboard, they all rush over and start begging, and sometimes I can’t resist. This coupled with a treat before I walk out the door for work and one at night…well all the calories add up and I’ve seen a little weight gain.

And I know I’m not alone in this.

Try and not go overboard with the treat giving and instead reward them with…

2. Longer Walks

Now this is a win-win for both of you. Try and allot a little more time to take your dog on a walk. The cardio keeps them lean and helps you stay in shape as well. I love to schedule phone calls on my walks. Not only do the pups get exercise, the endorphins keep me creative and make the conversations stimulating.

What are you doing to keep you and your dog happy and healthy in 2020?
